Pain Relief

Many people are affected by chronic pain throughout their body. Unfortunately, some treatments are not always as effective as we would hope. Thankfully, acupuncture has been proven to be effective and efficient in reducing pain throughout the body.

Chronic pain in the muscles and joints can make life very difficult for some people. There can be many ways to treat these ailments like applying ice and heat to the affected area, taking anti-inflammatory medications, and performing physical therapy along with exercising. Unfortunately, some of these medications and remedies are not always as effective as they should be. However, acupuncture can effectively treat pain throughout the body.

Acupuncture can also be combined with electricity; this action is called Percutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation (PENS). PENS, like traditional acupuncture, can be used to treat many ailments including various types of pain. A study, titled Use of Percutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation in the Short-term management of Headache, was published in the Journal of Head and Face Pain in 2001. The study looked at thirty subjects who suffered from chronic headaches. They subjects received ‘needles alone’ therapy, which is essentially traditional acupuncture, and also PENS therapy. The group of patients who received the PENS reported significant decreases in the amount of pain experienced from headaches and they also reported a greater improvement in physical activity.

“I think the benefit of acupuncture is clear, and the complications and potential adverse effects of acupuncture are low compared with medication,” says Dr. Lucy Chen, a board-certified anesthesiologist, specialist in pain medicine, and practicing acupuncturist at Harvard-affiliated Massachusetts General Hospital.
